Outdoor Survival Kit - Stainless Steel Knife
Since its creation in 1890, the Opinel company has been manufacturing its knives in the heart of the French Alps. All their products are entirely produced in their factory in Chambéry. The Opinel No8 is the most versatile size in their ever-growing line of folding knives.
This heavy-duty survival knife features a 2.5 mm thick 12C27 Sandvik stainless steel blade, with a thick serrated area for cutting rope or other coarse items. It also includes an integrated 4-season 110-decibel survival whistle and a shackle key. The handle is made of fiberglass-reinforced polyamide, which can withstand shocks, humidity, and extreme temperatures ranging from -40°F to +176°F. The handle also has a non-slip area for a secure grip.
The classic Opinel blade has adopted a Yatagan shape, inspired by a traditional Turkish saber. The blade is ground to an exclusive convex profile, which ensures the strength of the blade and allows for efficient re-grinding. This 12C27 modified stainless steel is anti-corrosive, thanks to the addition of chrome, and requires no special maintenance. Its carbon content of at least 0.40% provides an excellent cutting edge.
The Opinel No8 is small enough to be used as a pocket knife, and its 3 1/4-inch blade prevents it from being considered a weapon in most states (users should check with their local laws). This knife also features the patented Virobloc Safety ring, invented by Marcel Opinel in 1955. The Virobloc has two sections, one fixed and one sliding, which allows the user to lock the blade both open (for safety during use) and closed (for safety during transport).
